A Brackley pensioner is one of just two people in the country to win £100,000 in a monthly prize draw with Halifax bank.
Charles Everett has been a customer at the Banbury branch in Castle Quay for 16 years, and was one of thousands of customers across the UK who use the bank to be entered in their monthly prize draws.
The 79-year-old had received a letter several weeks ago from the bank to say he had been entered into the national draw, and despite not thinking anything of it, was shocked when branch manager Camille Gabay informed him last Thursday to say he had won.
Mr Everett and his wife Denise came into the branch the same day, where they were presented with champagne, chocolate and some flowers, as well as a cheque for £100,000.
He said: “I am in complete shock and both my wife and I were tearful when we found out. When I got the call to say I’d won I thought it was only £100 or £1,000. But £100,000 is incredible, I didn’t know what to say!”
“When I had entered the draw I didn’t get too excited about it – I could be in with a chance of winning a small amount but didn’t think I’d win the amount I did.
“We will have a sit down and talk through what we will do with the money, but want to tell our friends, children and grandchildren first.”
Each month Halifax’s draws includes three big prizes of £100,000, 100 prizes of £1,000 and 1,000 prizes of £100 to give away to customers who have got a minimum amount in a savings account.
Mrs Gabay said it was emotional telling Mr Everett, the first Banbury customer to win the top prize, that he had won £100,000.
She said: “It is a lovely moment for them both and we are all really happy for them.”
