Abbey-Anne Gyles-Brown, 21, was crowned Miss Earth England at The Miss Earth UK finals in Birmingham at the end of August.

The Miss Earth title is formatted in much the same way as the more familiar Miss World pageant but with an important additional extra.

Abbey-Anne said: “So it’s all about your environmental message. You had to have an advocacy, we had to pick a subject and make our own display board and base it around that.

“Mine was ‘Who’s picking up Your Litter’ so it’s like a normal beauty pageant but you have to have an advocacy and something to talk about.”

This is the second time Abbey-Anne has entered the over 18 Miss Earth event, first competing in 2016, but is no stranger to beauty pageants.

Abbey-Anne said: “I entered the competition when I was a teen and won the title of Teen Earth and just carried on. My mum entered me for that one but I have been doing pageants since 2012.”

Abbey-Anne’s concern for littering and the environment is far from a pageant gimmick but a topic she has deep concerns about.

She is currently the lead youth activist with Clean Up Britain and is planning further projects with the group.

She said: “I think litter affects all ages and the younger generation need to speak about it more.

“Next, Clean Up Britain will be doing school tours to teach children about litter then we will be doing some TV and radio interviews.”

As Miss Earth England Abbey-Anne has to promote her chosen advocacy for the next 12 months and ways to protect the environment by posting on social media, attending events or by organising events. She said: “I have launched a two minute litter pick with Clean Up Britain. It’s in Leamington at the moment but we’re hoping to bring it to Northamptonshire.

“It’s had a huge impact already and we’ve had some real positives from it.”

Being crowned Miss Earth England now propels Abbey-Anne into the Miss Earth international finals taking place in the Philippines from October 6 through to November 3.

“I’m excited, I’m not really nervous. We’ve done the hardest bit now getting into the competition. Just enjoy the next part now.”
