Banbury's sensitive support of Oxfordshire Sands

Banbury has in recent years collectively shown continued and heartfelt support for parents who have lost children.

Residents and businesses have also provided much support of Oxfordshire Sands and the various events and campaigns the volunteer group has taken part in.

In October 2016 a ribbon tree was planted in Peoples’ Park allowing bereaved parents to place a ribbon on the living memorial to commemorate neonatal and post natal infant deaths.

The tree was donated by Nicholsons Nursery of North Aston and was organised by the Save the Horton Action Group and supported by Banbury Town Council, Oxfordshire Sands and Banbury MP Victoria Prentis.

After being vandalised the town came together again in May of the following year to replace the tree, this time donated by Edd Frost and Daughters Funeral Directors.

The Banbury funeral directors have a long and deeply personal relationship with Oxfordshire Sands after Edd and his family suffered the loss of a baby.

Last year funeral director Aaron Taylor was awarded Funeral Director of the Year at the Foundation for Infant Loss Conference and they will be once again supporting Oxfordshire Sands during awareness week.

Edd Frost said: “We are supporting it as ever and will be taking part and attending the service on Sunday evening.”

He added: “We are always pleased to support anything with regards to Sands and have strong relations with the charity as a result.”

MP Victoria Prentis will also be supporting the events after she too suffered the loss of a child.

She has also been a long-time campaigner for maternal safety and is vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Baby Loss.

Baby Loss Awareness Week brings together more than 60 organisations, including Sands, to raise awareness about the key issues affecting those who have experienced pregnancy loss or baby death in the UK.

Now in its 16th year, Baby Loss Awareness Week calls for tangible improvements in research, care and policy around bereavement support and highlights bereavement support and services available for anyone affected by the death of a baby at any stage.

Throughout the week bereaved parents, their families and friends, unite with each other and others across the world to commemorate the lives of babies who died during pregnancy, at or soon after birth and in infancy.
