Banbury firefighters save elderly couple trapped in vehicle after flooding

An elderly couple were carried to safety by Banbury firefighters yesterday (Wednesday) after their vehicle got stuck in flood water in Cropredy.

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service were called at 9.30pm to Williamscot Road with the two occupants trapped inside their vehicle.

Two fire engines from Banbury and the specialist rescue team from Kidlington were mobilised to the incident and found them stranded in their car in more than half a metre of water.

Firefighters wearing dry suits and personal flotation devices accessed the car and carried the driver and his wife to safety.

Simon Piper, watch manager, said: “If you cannot gauge the depth of the water do not risk trying to drive through as the consequences can be both dangerous and costly.

“Never drive through water if you are unsure of the depth,15cms/six inches of water is enough to cause the loss of control of a vehicle or the possibility of stalling as water enters the exhaust or air intakes.”
