Hundreds braved the damp weather on Sunday to watch X Factor winner Sam Bailey switch on Banbury’s Christmas lights.

The crowds were entertained by the singer and other performers including local band The Next Hot Thing, Banbury Rock Choir and a Beyonce tribute act. There was also a fairground but the fireworks finale had to be called off because of the bad weather.

Events officer for Banbury Town Council, Ann Sewell, said: “Full credit to those that did come down. There was still a good crowd despite the weather.

“Sam was fantastic – we couldn’t have asked for more. She did a meet and greet and performed some songs which went down really well.”

She praised all the performers including Gary Barlow tribute act, Mitch, for their professionalism.

“Everybody was in full spirit and carried on as normal,” she said. “That is what is good about Banbury – you get those die hards that support the events come what may.”
