The process to rename Banbury Academy began in October of last year and involved the entire school of students, the student council and staff.

The move has come as a reflection of the schools evolution from its former life as Banbury School .

Rebecca Mileham, chair of the board of governors, said: “We’re two schools here plus a sixth form so it’s about us having the opportunity to think about the vision of the campus and to think of a name under which we can bring that vision.”

Head teacher Sylvia Thomas, added: “This has been a going on for months. This has been a real process that everyone’s been involved with.”

The new name, Wykham Park Academy Banbury, will take effect in September in addition to a new logo and motto, that reflect the schools shared goals and aspirations.

The rebranding of Banbury School has also allowed it to integrate the democratic process into their current teachings about Brexit and democracy.

Mrs Thomas said: “The whole discussion of the motto has been really interesting. What they have voted for is Pride, Passion and Progress.

“Effectively we’ve been saying to the students what do you want the school to be, what are your dreams so we’ve been talking about that a lot.”

Adam Brunsden, a Year 9 student on the student council, added: “We chose a few mottos and then we mashed them together.”

The logo, too, was chosen by the student’s. Student Council member and Year 7 student Cheyenne Malloy, said: “We got together and we looked at the logos and we had vote and a name list and we ticked the one we wanted.”

Further rebranding will be announced next month as the school unveils its new uniform and PE kit which will also come into affect in September.

Again chosen by the students final decisions on colours, designs and materials are currently being made.

Mrs Thomas said: “ Students will be bought their blazers, they will be bought their ties and their PE tops.”
