Armed police swooped on the Chandos Road Building this morning at 11.15am, after reports that a man been seen with a firearm or an imitation firearm.

But despite some alarm among local residents, university bosses have revealed the harmless - if surreal - explanation.

A university spokesman said: “A student was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm.

“There is a university-organised James Bond party tonight.”

Thames Valley Police spokesman seeked to reassure residents following the incident.

They said: “We were called to an incident and responded in a swift but proportionate manner.”
