Locust Honey String Band are playing as part of their UK and Ireland tour. The band, who hail from North Carolina, are led by Chloe Edmonstone and Meredith Watson and are renowned for their playing of the authentic sound of Appalachian Mountain music. Playing a mix of bluegrass, pre-war blues and original material using fiddle, banjos and guitar, and accompanied with vintage vocal harmonies, the band create a sound that is hard driving, high energy ‘old time’ music. The music played on the night will be Motown & Northern Soul, all played on original vinyl records. Guest DJ on the night is Wayne Sibthorpe. Fay Hield is a multi-award-winning folk artist who has won the BBC Radio 2 folk award, been nominated for BBC Radio 2’s Horizon award and is also recognised in the world of academia as a lecturer in Music at The University of Sheffield. Fay will be coming to The Mill Arts Centre, along with her six-piece band, The Hurricane Party, with songs from her new album, Old Adam, which takes traditional folk songs and twists them to appeal to a modern day audience and asks audiences to think about how we relate to them. The Oxfordshire Dixieland Jazz Band join the acrobat musicians of French company Circa Tsuica, which is coming to Oxford as a part of a nine-venue tour of its hit show Opus 7, a feel-good blend of daredevil acrobatics and ripping brass rhythm - with added local flavour.

How we protect Britain’s endangered wildlife will be the topic under discussion at Sibford School’s next Café Scientifique. Guest speaker will be Peter Newbold, a senior ecologist with the Oxford office of environmental consultants BSG Ecology. Peter holds Natural England survey licences for the great crested newt, dormouse, smooth snake and sand lizard and has worked on variety of projects including housing developments, solar farms and quarry proposals. He is currently managing the licenced translocation of great crested newts for a major rail improvement scheme. Café Scientifique takes place at Sibford School in Sibford Ferris near Banbury once a term. The café welcomes members of the public as well as pupils from the school.
