Banbury youngsters sought for role in musical show

A youth drama company in Banbury is looking to take children back to the 80s with an adaptation of an Adam Sandler comedy.

Youth of Banbury Operatic Society is staging The Wedding Singer and wants 11 to 19-year-olds to come along for a taster day taking place at the weekend.

The group was given special permission by the touring company’s production team to be the only group in the country allowed to perform the show alongside the tour, which stars Ray Quinn and is due to start later this year.

The society’s new director is 19-year-old Luke Wetherill, who has recently completed a course at the Oxford School of Drama.

“I am beyond thrilled to be asked by the team to direct for such an inspirational and supportive group,” said Luke.

“I have been performing with YOBOS for the past three years and I am eager to undertake the exciting new challenge of directing.

“The team and myself cannot wait to welcome back our previous members as well as invite new members into the group for our 15th anniversary production.”

The Wedding Singer takes the audience back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.

It’s set in 1985, when rock star wannabe Robbie Hart was New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer.

He’s the life of the party until his own fiancée, Linda, leaves him at the altar.

Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own.

The taster day for The Wedding Singer takes place on Sunday at Christopher Rawlins Primary School from 2pm until 6pm and anyone interested in either performing or working behind the scenes is invited to attend.

The event costs £5 and no previous experience is required.
