Banburyshire's biggest traditional May Day event is a Bank Holiday date not to be missed

Organisers are putting the finishing touches to Banburyshire's biggest traditional May Day event – a day not to be missed.

May Day is one of Britain’s (and Europe’s) favourite annual festivals, marking the beginning of summer. This year in Hornton – where crowds go to enjoy the festivities – the event takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4.

Children from Hornton Primary School choose a May Queen and May King and process to the maypole for the coronation.

And residents have been busy gathering items for sale and baking cakes for the fundraising stalls.

The May Day celebrations are accompanied by a variety of stalls, entertainments and refreshments for residents and visitors alike.

There will be a White Elephant stall and the usual big Raffle with all sorts of prizes to be won. There will be a children’s Toys and Games stall where there will also be baby equipment looking for a new home.

The event will include a May Day Clothes Stall with a selection of designer and nearly-new clothing. And there will be a cake stall offering all sorts of delicious cakes, biscuits, brownies and other sweet treats. Books and puzzles will also be a feature.

The Wine and Water stall is bound to be busy again – it is one of the most popular regulars at the May Day Festival.

There will be refreshments to suit all tastes. May Day celebrations start on the day at 12.30pm; the children's parade is at 1.30pm and crowning of the May King and Queen takes place at 1.45pm.
