Parts of Banbury’s premier park will be closed as the work goes ahead and alternative route signs will guide visitors around the out-of-bounds areas.

The repair and resurfacing is the third phase of an ongoing project organised by Banbury Town Council to make pathways safer for park users. The cost of this year’s phase is £50,000.

Contractors have been advised to comply with coronavirus social distancing rules while carrying out the work.

Cllr Colin Clarke, chairman of the council’s general services committee, said: “This is necessary work that needs to be finished. It is a priority for the council.

“A fourth phase in 2021 should see all the footpaths in People’s Park in good order.

“I know coronavirus is on residents’ minds but this type of work is not affected by virus restrictions as long as workers remember the rules.

”Our contractors have completed a risk assessment and a method statement – and we are confident that rules will not be broken.

“We hope that virus restrictions will be lifted during the summer and by then the work will be finished and park visitors will not be inconvenienced by footpath repairs.”
