Coronavirus cases decrease across Cherwell district area

The number of coronavirus cases across Cherwell district have decreased while much of the rest of the country, including Oxford have seen an increase in Covid-19 cases.

There has been a total of 128 confirmed Covid-19 cases in Oxfordshire in the seven days up to September 25, according to Oxfordshire County Council. This is an increase from 92 new cases in the previous week.

This is equivalent to a weekly rate of new cases of 18.5 per 100,000 residents.

The Cherwell district saw 15 positive Covid-19 cases during this period, a decrease from the previous week. The number of cases for Cherwell brought it into the top end of the green status.

There has been a decrease in positive cases for Cherwell since the last report by the Banbury Guardian. In the seven day period up to September 11 the Cherwell area was in the yellow alert status with 24 positive cases.

A spokesperson for Cherwell District Council said: “The council is pleased that cases are currently low and have reduced since last week in Cherwell district.

"Local people’s hard work maintaining social distancing, washing their hands and wearing face coverings is welcomed and should be continued diligently.

"The increase of cases in Oxford shows how quickly the situation can deteriorate, so Cherwell District Council is continuing to encourage people to follow that simple public health advice, to avoid giving the virus any foothold in our communities.”

Ansaf Azhar, Oxfordshire County Council’s director for public health, said: “We have seen a considerable increase in cases in Oxford.

“While this mirrors what is happening nationally, we must remember that cases in Oxford have doubled over the past week and the situation can deteriorate further very quickly. If we don’t all take this very seriously, we risk seeing tough local restrictions imposed that none of us want.

“My plea is a simple one – keep your distance, wash your hands, wear a mask, and ensure you are adhering to the rule of six.

“It’s up to all of us to bring the virus under control. The latest figures are a stark warning that we must act now. We need to slow the rate before it’s too late.”
