Paris 2024 Gold Medallist Inspires Banbury Children

Pupils of St. Leonard's Primary School have been inspired by Kieran and his Olympic journey. During Kieran's visit, he delivered an inspirational whole-school assembly, engaging the children in his Olympic journey from learning to swim, to winning gold in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay Team this summer. He spoke passionately about how resilience and determination are key values to success, and used his personal experience of missing the qualifying time for the 400 meters event to show how we can overcome disappointments, by changing our mindsets, to achieve our goals. Kieran also paid tribute to his family, as one child asked who had inspired him, he emotionally replied, "My parents. I see how much they did for me and how hard they have worked. They really inspire me."
After the assembly, Kieran took the time to meet with every class, take photos and show them his gold medal. The children were overjoyed and awestruck to be able to see and hold an Olympic medal - let alone a gold one! One Reception child said, "He let us touch his medal and it felt bumpy! I like to go swimming every week." A Year 6 pupil exclaimed, "He was very inspiring because I do a lot of sports and I asked him for some advice on how to choose one. He said I should do my favourite one so that I always enjoy it!" Staff at the school were also inspired by his visit, with one teacher now planning on learning to swim herself! She said, "Perhaps I won't be Olympic standard, but I'd love to learn this new skill and gain confidence in the pool."
