Shoulder specialist urges fitness enthusiasts to prioritise joint health while exercising

A leading shoulder specialist from Oxford is encouraging fitness enthusiasts to prioritise their joint health while exercising amid a surge in gym memberships after New Year celebrations.

Professor Stephen Gwilym, Lead Clinician at the Oxford Shoulder and Elbow Group, warned fitness journeys can be unnecessarily interrupted by preventable shoulder injuries he sees on a regular basis.

With 25 years' experience as an orthopaedic surgeon and a PhD investigating the causes of shoulder pain, Professor Gwilym will join Welbeck Health Partners' new centre in Jordan Hill when it opens in the next 12 months.

He brings extensive expertise in managing shoulder and elbow disorders to the Oxford community at a time where data from UK Active shows more than half of Britons now use gyms to manage health conditions.

Through his research leadership in clinical trials exploring optimal treatments for shoulder pain, Professor Gwilym has observed a growing trend in exercise-related shoulder issues.

"Too often, I see patients whose fitness journey has been interrupted by shoulder discomfort," he said. "In most cases, these injuries are entirely preventable, and if not preventable, very treatable.

"Our shoulder is one of the most mobile joints we have and is essential to almost all gym-based activities including weight lifting, swimming and running.”

Professor Gwilym cited the most common injuries he encounters as shoulder pain caused by tendon damage, arthritic changes in the shoulder and shoulder dislocations from sporting activities.

For those looking to protect their shoulder health, Professor Gwilym provided some expert insights.

He said: "Start with proper form. Any deviation from the advised technique during exercises such as bench or overhead presses can lead to problems over time. This is where investing in a professional coach or partnering with a gym buddy can make all the difference.

"Most people experience some muscle aching after exercise, which is normal. However, if you notice a decreased range of movement in your shoulder, or experience pain while lying in bed at night, it's important to seek professional advice promptly. With early assessment, we can typically provide quick and effective treatment, getting you back to your activities with minimal disruption."

The new £30m Welbeck Health Partners centre will offer Oxfordshire residents access to state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, comprehensive biomedical assessment and personalised treatment plans. The centre's integrated approach means patients can move seamlessly from initial consultation through investigation to treatment all under one roof.

"I'm excited to join the Welbeck team ahead of our Oxford centre launch," said Professor Gwilym. "The Welbeck Orthopaedic team approach combines surgical expertise with preventive care, ensuring patients can maintain their active lifestyles with confidence.

“When symptoms do develop, our team provides rapid access to specialised care, focusing on getting patients back to the activities they enjoy as quickly and safely as possible."
