Residents get behind carer, Nappo, as he takes to Banbury boxing ring for charity

Healthcare Assistant, Florindo Dos Santos, known as Nappo, is hoping the support of residents at the Wantage care home where he works will help him in the ring as he prepares for a charity boxing match.

The 30 year old, who works at Elmbrook Court care home on Grove Road, will be taking part in the Ultra White Collar Boxing event on the 8th November in Banbury.

Inspired by caring for his dad at home, and the residents at the 74-bedroomed home, he’s hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for charities close to his heart.

“I started boxing and training in Kung Fu ten years ago but it’s a long time since I’ve taken part in a match so I’m a little bit nervous!” he joked. “But I wanted to raise money for charity and this was a really different way to do it. I’ve already raised more than £100 that I can donate to Cancer Research, The British Heart Foundation and the Mental Health Foundation. The residents are all behind me which is such a great help.”

Elmbrook Court is a purpose-built care home offering residential, respite, nursing and memory care. Donald Lacey will be among the residents who’ll be attending the match with care team members from the home.

“I get on really well with Nappo and I want to be there to cheer him on,” said Donald. “I enjoy watching boxing and I really want to see him win!”

Ultra White Collar Boxing is so-called because it was originally aimed at professionals in ’white collar’ jobs. UWCB gives people the opportunity to fight in a safe environment. Competitors train together to make sure they are evenly matched. They are given medical assessments before and after the bout, and protective headgear has to be worn.

Nappo’s eight week training is underway for the three round match and support in the home is strong.

“We’re incredibly proud to support Nappo,” said Deputy Manager at Elmbrook Court, Aislinn Mullee. “The causes he is fighting for are very close to our hearts as a home, and we want to do everything we can to help him raise both awareness and vital funds. Our team will make sure that any residents who wish to attend the match can be there in person to cheer him on from ringside — it’s important for us to stand together as a family and celebrate the difference he is making.”
