Banbury’s centuries-old Michaelmas Fair was officially declared open by the town mayor and district council chair yesterday (Wednesday, October 14).

Following tradition, Banbury Town Mayor Mark Cherry and Cherwell District Council chair Cllr Nigel Simpson officially opened the fair using a large golden key presented to them by the team at Bob Wilson’s Fun Fairs.

After the opening ceremony, the mayor and council chair toured the town centre, giving fairgoers free rides on attractions they touched with the special key.

Banbury’s Michaelmas Fair, which is believed to date back to the 17th century, has been run by Bob Wilson’s Fun Fairs in partnership with the district council for several years.

The fair began as a mop fair, where local farm workers, labourers and servants sought employment. During the Victorian era, the event became more focused on entertainment.

This year’s Michaelmas Fair runs from Wednesday, October 14, until Saturday, October 17.
