With gym's set to re-open on July 25, there are going to be some people who will run straight back in, and others that may feel a bit nervous and apprehensive about returning.

There is no right or wrong way to feel about it, as the last few months have been very bizarre for everyone. If you are wanting to return to the gym as soon as it is open, then there are a few things that you can do to benefit you, and others around you.

Firstly; every gym may have different rules, so make sure you know them before you go in, and make sure you are prepared for what you may or may not have to do.

Secondly; be polite. Everyone is trying to make the best of a new and unnerving situation, and manners cost nothing.

Now, in terms of getting back into exercise, if you have been more sedentary or have continued doing exercise during lockdown, either way, it would be wise to take it steady for the first week or two.

Do not rush back into doing exactly what you used to do before lockdown and then wonder why you're aching for days on end, or worse, pick up an injury that puts you out of action for a while.

Drop your previous weights by 20 to 30 per cent, and possibly think about reducing the intensity of your cardiovascular exercise to start. Warm up well and take your time with more complex moves.

Although I am obviously biased in this area, I would certainly recommend getting some professional help if you are unsure of what to do or how to go about things, whether that be asking the staff at the facility you go to, or investing in hiring a personal trainer.

You may be wary that lockdown has caused you to gain weight, lose fitness, and lose strength, but you do not need to go to extremes and try to get to where you want to be within the first week of training. Take your time; progression, not perfection.
