Residents at Featherton House care home in Deddington are overjoyed after being able to see their family face to face for the first time since government restrictions were eased.

Since March, residents at the home have been keeping in touch with their families virtually because visits to the home had been restricted to ensure the safety of residents.

Now, one relative at a time is able to visit their loved ones at Featherton House in an allocated space outside, at the front of the home, while adhering to social distancing requirements.

One of the residents who has enjoyed an afternoon in the sun with her family member is Margery Hawes, 97.

Margery was born in Dunsfold, Surrey and later in life, she lived in Kenya after being married to her husband, Oliver. They share a daughter Caroline and son Richard. Margery served in WAF as a plotter for incoming enemy planes and says she loved it every minute she spent in the WAF. On VE Day 2020, she was awarded a brooch by the British Legion for her services to the country.

Margery said: “It was lovely to see my grandson after a while, as I have only been able to speak to him over the phone till now.”

Margery’s grandson, George, said: “I was delighted to see my grandmother for the first time since lockdown! I visited my mom after four months at the first chance I got, and I really wanted to come to see my granny too.”

Agi Rygala, interim manager of Featherton House, said: “Being able to welcome back families to Featherton House was a long-awaited day by us all. Though we have done our very best to keep everyone in touch virtually, being able to spend time with each other in person again has been priceless for our residents and their relatives.

“We’re blessed to have a spacious area at the front of our home to host a family member at a safe distance, and look forward to seeing more faces very soon.”

Visits to the home are subject to a series of strict infection control criteria, including temperature checks on arrival and wearing the correct PPE, which can be provided.

Featherton House care home is part of Wren Retirement Living and is currently managed by Healthcare Management Solutions it is rated “Good” by the Care Quality Commission with “Outstanding” care.
