A Banbury resident has launched a Change.org petition to save Marks and Spencers Banbury town centre store after it announced plans to close last month.

The petition has already gained 477 signatures at the time of writing with the modest target of 500 almost reached.

Last month the retail giant announced that the food and clothing store in Castle Quay was to close 'within weeks'.

The store was the first major store to come to the Castle Shopping Centre which was later extended to become Castle Quay, when Debenhams arrived in town.

Banbury will still have a M&S store at the Gateway Retail Park alongside the M40 but this will be out of town and is not as easily accessible by public transport as the Bridge Street store.

There are also concerns that the closure of an 'anchor store' such as M&S will have a detrimental knock on effect for the entire shopping centre.

Comments on the petition site echo these fears with one signatory writing "My parents who are elderly use this store all the time for their food . My dad is partly sighted and my mum can not walk far it gets them out the house , if this store closes they will have no reason to go into town."

While another adds: "I use the food side of M&S on a regular basis and due to insurmountable amount of traffic and being the other side of town I cannot and will not be using the one on Gateway shopping area."
