New bridge to be placed in ongoing Castle Quay Waterfront development in Banbury's town centre
The bridge lifting procedure will take place to the cinema section of the development, and should take approximately an hour. The procedure will occur at some point between 6 and 8pm, during which time the towpath will be closed.
Alternative routes will be in place during this window and will be clearly signposted.
The new bridge was delivered to the cinema section of the development on August 26 and assembled over the course of the following week.
The bridge will be accessible to members of the public from spring or summer 2021, depending on the construction programme, which is continually reviewed in light of COVID-19.
Cllr Tony Ilott, lead member for finance at Cherwell District Council, said: “As part of ongoing construction works on the Castle Quay Waterfront development, we can confirm that the installation of a new bridge adjacent to the future site of The Light Cinema will take place (today) 3 September.
"This should take no longer than an hour and is scheduled to take place between 6 and 8pm. Alternative routes will be in place during this time and will be clearly signposted across the site.
“Castle Quay Waterfront will bring an exceptional new offering for Banbury, enhancing the existing shopping centre and improving connectivity within the town. We are excited to see Castle Quay Waterfront continue to develop and will continue to provide regular updates via the Castle Quay website”.
Last month the works marked a major milestone with the hotel reaching the tallest point of construction at the top of the building that is set to become a Premier Inn hotel. The framework for the car park, Lidl supermarket and hotel are also now in place.
It is anticipated that the supermarket and hotel elements of the development will open in spring or summer of 2021, while the cinema and restaurant units are expected to open in early 2022.
The new development will transform this area into a new canal-side retail and leisure destination, complete with The Light© Cinema, Lidl supermarket, Premier Inn hotel and restaurants.
The new line-up will complement the existing line-up at Castle Quay Shopping Centre, helping to attract a greater number of visitors from across the region while providing a boost to Banbury’s evening economy.
