Job loss plan at Banbury coffee plant rescinded for further talks - says union representatives

Unite, Britain and Ireland’s largest union, said yesterday (Thursday March 12) that Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) had retracted its proposal so that ‘meaningful negotiations’ can be held between now and October.

Unite has about 300 members at the Ruscote Avenue site that produces the Kenco Tassimo and Millicano brands.

Unite national officer for the food industry Joe Clarke said: “Unite and the management had constructive talks on Wednesday March 11 and we reached an agreement on a new memorandum.

“This highlights a firm commitment from Unite to engage constructively in a dialogue to ensure the future sustainability of the Banbury site, with a view to increase efficiency and make the plant more productive in line with its European counterparts.

“In return, the company has retracted its ‘dismissal and reengage’ proposal and both parties have now entered into negotiations to reach our collective goals. These talks will continue until October.

“We believe we have laid the foundations for a harmonious industrial relations’ framework moving forward.”

Officials with JDE said while they're unable to comment on the details of the discussions they offered the following statement.

Rob Williams, plant director, said: "We have been proudly making coffee in Banbury for 55 years and want to continue to do so. As we’re in the process of consultation with Unite the union and our employees on the proposed changes, we are unable to comment on the details of the discussions.

"We’re pleased that we have a commitment from Unite to engage on the proposed changes to be implemented by October 2020.

"We encourage everyone to work together to reach an agreement that benefits both the company and our employees."
