Film club at Age UK ends but '˜Digital Friday' to start in Banbury

The charity’s base in Banbury has been a popular venture for older people living in the town every Friday with a selection films on show for them to watch over the years.

But at the start of the month they stopped showing the films and are now doing Digital Friday workshops to help older people get familiar with accessing them on digital devices such as mobile phones, iPads, laptops or PCs.

Lynda Moore, centre manager, has said although it is sad the film club will no longer be running in Banbury, she wants to encourage those who previously used the facility to find our and learn how to watch films on various media platforms.

She said: “We have got to have different licences to be able to show a DVD and a motion picture so the costs were becoming too high for us to manage. It was not something that is sustainable going forward.

“We’d like to say thank you to everyone who has supported Age UK. Everybody has told me they were really well attended and always had a good atmosphere.”

Digital Friday will be taking place on the same time slots as the films that were due to be shown on Friday. The next date is tomorrow (Friday) will others on February 26, March 11 and March 25 where people can find out how to access movies on other digital platforms.

Mrs Moore said: “At Age UK Oxfordshire we want to ensure that older people have access to the digital world, as so many are experiencing digital exclusion.

“Showing them how to access films and programs online is such a small and simple way to help them through the door into a digital world.”
