A church coffee morning volunteer has been convicted of sexually assaulting an 84-year-old woman.

Robert Madge, 63, of Wormleighton, was found guilty at Oxford Crown Court on Friday.

He had previously admitted touching the victim inappropriately after offering to walk her home from a church coffee morning but said she instigated the incident by kissing him and throwing her arms around him.

The court heard that Madge walked the victim home and told her he fancied her. He went into her house and kissed her hard on the mouth before touching her breasts and intimate areas.

Two days afterwards Madge phoned the victim to apologise.

The victim said she froze during the assault.

Instructing the jury, Judge Pringle asked them to consider whether they believed the victim had consented to the act, or whether Madge reasonably believed that she had.

Following Madge’s conviction Judge Pringle told him he would face a long jail sentence before remanding him in custody.

He will face sentence at Oxford Crown Court on April 29.
