Banbury town mayor Ann Bonner welcomed Her Majesty, the Duke of Edinburgh and 150 invited guests to Banbury Town Hall with a warm speech.
Her speech in full was:

"Your Majesty and Your Royal Highness

"On behalf of the town and the community of Banbury I am so honoured to welcome you both. I hope in these few brief words to be able to convey to you the depth of warmth and sense of pride that we feel that you have visited us today.

"2008 is such an important year for the town as we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the granting of the Charter and we not only wanted to celebrate all we feel we have to be proud of in the town but to also make it a time that would be remembered for years to come.

"King James 1 did visit the town in 1604 and together with his Queen, Anne of Denmark, stayed at Broughton Castle.

"It is so appropriate therefore that in this special year your visit today has ensured that another page in the rich history of the town has been etched - thank you both so much.

"There are so many people in the town and indeed in the hall this morning that vividly remember your Majesty's visit in 1959. It has stayed with them all of their lives and I am confident that the many people in the town this morning, including the 3,000 Banbury school children lining the route, will find it equally memorable.

"May I now invite Your Majesty to kindly unveil our plaque in commemoration of your visit."

After Her Majesty had unveiled the plaque, Cllr Bonner continued:

"During your last visit you very kindly signed our Visitors' Book, which has been kept and treasured, and it would be such an honour if you would both sign our visitors book again - and accept these gifts from the town in commemoration of your time here with us today.

"Your visit has meant so much to us all.

"You very kindly expressed a wish to meet representatives of the community of Banbury and gathered here today are not only some of our most worthy townspeople but also your Majesty's most loyal subjects.
Thank you so much."
