Phillips kicks vital points to win derby

HEAD coach James Kerr will be looking for Banbury Bulls to make it back-to-back victories at Bodicote Park when they entertain Dunlop on Saturday.

Bulls got the second half of the season off to the best possible start with a much-needed 15-13 victory over neighbours Shipston-on-Stour to gain revenge for their defeat at the Warwickshire side earlier in the season.

The victory was enough to lift Bulls up one place in the Midlands Two West South table in their bid to avoid relegation.

A last-gasp try from Simon Brand set up captain Ed Phillips who kicked the winning points with his conversion deep into stoppage-time.

But Bulls had only themselves to blame for leaving the outcome in doubt up to the final whistle as they dominated both possession and territory, especially in the first half with the pack providing the backs with a stream of ball.

Bulls only had a Phillips penalty to show for their efforts at the break in reply to a breakaway try from Shipston centre Tom Corby. Banbury’s backs finally found some fluency for winger Carl Daniels to score a fine try.

A try from winger Josh Byrd and a penalty from Toby Jones increased Shipston’s lead. But Brand forced his way over close to the posts, leaving Phillips a relatively easy conversion to win the game.
