Banbury bounced back from Saturday’s solitary goal defeat against South Club’s Women’s Hockey League leaders Basingstoke to take a point against Buckingham II 24 hours later.

Banbury lost 1-0 against Basingstoke but started Sunday’s division two fixture full of energy. After a period of end-to-end play Banbury broke the deadlock with a well taken volley by Charlie Matthews.

Buckingham fought back, putting Banbury under pressure and equalised before taking the lead shortly after the restart. Banbury responded well and began to dominate in the middle of the pitch. Strong defending by Sam Humphreys and Becca Edwards allowed Banbury to continue to apply attacking pressure. Several attacking phases went unconverted with the Buckingham keeper making some crucial saves. But Banbury kept their composure and in the closing stages Sadie Lapper lifted the ball into the back of the net.

Banbury went all out for the winner late on and some excellent skill from forward Nicola Brown earned a short corner as the final whistle blew. A great attempt from Hayley Nunnely was cleared by the Buckingham defence out of the D.
