Rory Williams completed a hat-trick as Gosport Borough beat Banbury United 4-2 at Spencer Stadium.

United were quickly out of the blocks in Saturday’s Evo-Stik League Southern clash and Chris Lait twice went close. But Williams gave Gosport a 27th minute lead from the penalty spot after Joseph N’Guessan tripped Daniel Woodeard in the box.

Aaron Cook doubled Gosport’s advantage in the 32nd minute when he headed home Samuel Igoe’s corner. Nabil Shariff reduced the arrears two minutes before the break when he raced on to Lait’s neat pass to beat the advancing Nathan Ashmore.

But within three minutes of the restart Gosport restored their two-goal cushion when Williams pounced on a loose ball in the box to beat Warren Carter from close range. And five minutes later Williams completed his hat-trick when he curled a delighful shot around Carter and into the far corner.

Lait fired a free-kick over as United looked to get back into the contest while at the other end Carter tipped over a free-kick from Igoe. Woodward was denied by the woodwork before Scott Bridges grabbed a late consolation from an 81st minute penalty.
