Saints could be relegated without a ball being kicked

Fellow strugglers AFC Telford United are safe, as are Gainsborough Trinity following Saturday’s results, with Saints unable to overhaul either club.

Saints had to settle for yet another point in Saturday’s Vanarama National League North 1-1 draw at Curzon Ashton where Danny Shaw’s late equaliser could prove so costly for Kevin Wilkin’s side.

It was Saints’ sixth draw in their last ten outings and it’s clear to see that a lack of goals has been the problem.

In the first half Richard Bachelor’s header was saved and Steve Diggin fired wide before Saints’ top scorer headed over. David Moyo gave Saints a 53rd minute lead but with seven minutes left Shaw equalised.

There was still time for Moyo to scrape the upright but two more dropped points looked to have sunk Saints.

They trail Lowestoft by two points but have a much better goal difference, so Saints will have to beat Tamworth in Saturday’s final game at St James Park to have any chance. Lowestoft entertain Gloucester City on Saturday but it may be too late by then if they pick up three points on Tuesday.
