George Nash grabbed the only goal of the game as Banbury United rocked Evo-Stik Southern League leaders Chippenham Town on Tuesday.

The Puritans followed up Saturday’s premier division draw at Kettering Town with a superb 1-0 victory three days later. And they had to do it with a man less for most of the first half after skipper Andy Gunn was sent off before Chippenham were also reduced to ten players.

Chippenham had the better of the early stages but United shocked the leaders by taking a 19th minute lead. The ball was well worked across from a throw-in into the centre where Mark Bell set up Nash just outside the area and he fired into the bottom corner of the net past Kent Kaupinnen.

But United received a major set-back in the 27th minute when Gunn was sent off for a second yellow card offence following an altercation with David Pratt.

Chippenham dominated the rest of the half and should have equalised just before the break when a cross found Matt Jones in plenty of space but he headed straight at Jack Harding.

Parity was restored when Pratt made a poor challenge on Jacob Blackstock in first half stoppage-time and the Chippenham striker was sent off for picking up his second yellow card.

Chippenham dominated the second half while United still posed a threat on the break and Blackstock’s shot from the edge of the area tested Kaupinnen. A cross from Blackstock was only partially cleared out to Felipe Barcelos who shot just wide from the edge of the box.

Substitute Alan Griffin should have done better when heading a cross straight at Harding from close range. But United had a decent chance when Nash put Barcelos through with just Kaupinnen to beat but his shot from the edge of the area went over.

Chippenham went close to equalising once again when Jones shot from the edge of the area but his low drive went inches wide of the far post.

Chippenham pushed forward frantically in the closing stages but United defended stoutly and the closest they came to an equaliser was a minute from time when Ricky Johnson cleared a goalbound shot from Jones off the line.
