The departure of club captain Andy Gunn was not an easy decision for Ford to make. But he knows it’s important to balance the books and, when new players come in, others have to leave.

Ford said: “I was out of football for a year so I was glad to accept this job but it might be my last one. I’m getting to the age now when some chairman might want to bring in younger coaches.

“I don’t want to be seen as a manager who can be over loyal because I know what this game is like. Players can get complacent and performances can dip.

“But I want to make sure I bring in the right type of player. You just have to make decisions based on what is best to take the club forwards.”

And Ford was keen to praise the player who led his team into the premier division at the first attempt.

He said: “Andy Gunn was probably the first player I spoke to when I was given the job. He’s been brilliant for us and led us to promotion last season.

“It was a difficult decision and I’ve nothing but praise for him. I had a long chat with Andy and explained to him that I thought we’ve got enough good young players in hand and they need to lead us forwards.”
