Banbury United manager Mike Ford is waiting to find out whether Michael Hopkins will be the second player to leave the club.

It was announced Charlie Wise had left the club following Saturday’s opening day Evo-Stik Southern League victory at Basingstoke Town while Hopkins has been given time to decide on his future.

I’m disappointed Charlie Wise has left the club, especially the way it all finished

Ford said: “I’m disappointed Charlie Wise has left the club, especially the way it all finished, because I’m sure he would still have had a bright future here. I told him I couldn’t guarantee him a place in the side so the decision has been made.

“Michael Hopkins has been given a couple of days to think about his situation. I want him to stay and fight for his place but at the moment I think David Lynn is in a better place to wear the number three shirt.

“David need a few more games to get himself fitter, especially coming to a new club. But he’s done really stepping up two division from the Hellenic League to this level.

“We’ve got eight games up until early September so we will need to use the whole squad and that’s what I told the players who were left out on Saturday. Young players need to realise that it’s not the end of the world to be left out of the starting line-up.”
