And it came against a club where he had a spell earlier in his career in the fourth minute of added-time in Sunday’s 2-2 draw in the tie at St James Park.

McDonald said: “As a Cardiff lad that goal meant a lot to me. I was only at Newport for a month and it didn’t work out for me so I went back to Forest Green Rovers before coming to Brackley and I’m loving it here.

“We did well to keep it down to 2-0 at halftime and the gaffer said it’s all about who gets the next goal.

“I didn’t know what to do when I scored, that was my first goal for the club and I’ve been here four years. It was a great time to get it!

“You’ve got to keep believing and hope you get one more chance. We got it and I scored the goal but I’m not the hero, there were 11 out there plus the substitutes.”
