Banbury captain Jimmy Phillips will have the full support of the town tomorrow (Friday) as he leads his side out for the ECB National t20 Finals at the Kia Oval.
The event will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, with town mayor Nicholas Turner and MP Sir Tony Baldry among those watching from afar in addition to the hundreds of supporters expected to make the trip to London.
Sir Tony said: “This is excellent news and I wish the cricket team every success.
“It is a very exciting time for the team and I am sure Banbury will give an excellent performance in the finals.”
Councillor Turner said: “Without doubt it is fantastic Banbury have reached the final. Banbury has some great sports clubs that have done very well on a national basis. I would urge everyone to show their support to the team and I hope they bring back some silverware.”
The White Post Road side will walk out at the prestigious Test ground in a yellow strip produced especially for the day.
The kit will be sponsored by family-run roofing firm the Hawkins Group after it won a 24-hour auction for the honour of supporting the Banbury team. Paul Jackson, director of the Thorpe Way business, said: “We are happy to support Banbury Cricket Club and feel the town should be extremely proud of them. For any sporting club it is a huge opportunity to play in a national event and they have put in a lot of hard work and effort to get where they are.
“We have followed the club for many years and seen them grow and progress into the team they are today.”
