TWO late goals from Nicky Gordon and Ady Fuller helped Banbury United bounce back to winning ways at Tiverton Town in Saturday's BGB Southern League Premier Division clash.
"It was just what I wanted and the players did exactly what they have done all season, bouncing back after a defeat," said boss Kieran Sullivan.
"It was a great result for us, we strong in midfield, where Ollie Stanbridge and Craig Pearman did wel
l, and Joe Murrell had a an easy game really."
Although neither keeper had a shot to save for the opening 45 minutes, it was certainly not through a lack of effort, as both defences had to be at their best throughout. Ollie Stanbridge had probably his best game of the season, working tirelessly in midfield from start to finish, and thoroughly deserving his man-of-the-match award.
During the early exchanges of the second-half, Tiverton had the game's first effort on target, but it was straight at Joe Murrell. Tiverton's midfield terrier Bobby Hopkinson was lucky to stay on the pitch in the 54th minute when a crude challenge on Tommy Kinch left the young defender to limp off to take no further part in the game. Hopkinson had already received a yellow card in the first-half after a similar challenge on Lewis Travers.
The change forced on United because of the injury seemed to revitalize their game when Anton Sambrook was brought on, with Ady Fuller crossing over to left-back and Craig Pearman moving to right-back.
In the 79th minute, United finally and deservedly broke the deadlock. Fuller drifted up the left and placed an inch-perfect pass into the six-yard box where Gordon glanced a perfectly weighted header wide of Martin Horsell.
United doubled their lead in the 90th minute, Stanbridge wriggled into the penalty area and was fouled by Hopkinson and Fuller slammed the spot-kick home.
