YOUNGSTERS have been given the chance to take to the water thanks to a £10,000 boost from Sport England.
The Lottery cash has been used to buy Banbury Sailing Club's new fleet of six boats for children.

Sally Gill of Sport England officially launched them with a soaking in Champagne on Saturday July 9, a perfect day for sailing – warm sunshine and a steady breeze.

Banbury Sailing Club member Caroline Southernwood said: "This is particularly good timing with the new Olympic bid announced and sailing having been the top medal-winning sport at the last two Olympics.

Such investments will help this trend continue.

"Junior sailing is a major priority of the club's activities, with all levels of ability, from beginner to Royal Yachting National Association youth squad."

The new fleet consists of four single-handed Toppers and two Hobie 405s, which are fast two-man boats designed with trapeze and asymmetric spinnaker especially for young sailors.

The Sport England grant covered half the £20,000 cost, with the rest coming from money raised by Banbury Sailing Club and business sponsors.

"The boat fleet represents the culmination of seven years of hard work by members of the committee and will be used for training and competitive racing," said Caroline.
