NICKY Gordon struck both goals as Banbury United ended the season in ninth place in the BGB Southern League Premier Division following a 2-1 success over Swindon Supermarine at Spencer Stadium.
But United got off to the worst start possible when confusion between Joe Murrell and Ady Fuller in the 14th minute led to the long-serving defender marking his 470th appearance for United by heading past the stranded keeper.
United had several ch
ances to equalise with substitute Stuart Bridges racing clear of the defence but he shot wide with only keeper Tom King to beat. Andy Baird, Fuller and Ollie Stanbridge had goalbound shots blocked in quick succession while Fuller also fired over form a free-kick.
Swindon almost doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Nick Stanley shot wide with the goal at his mercy with Murrell stranded. In first half stoppage-time Stanley was denied by Murrell and Baird missed United's best chance as King denied the United skipper.
Within 15 seconds of the re-start, Gordon grabbed the equaliser with his 20th goal of the season when Baird sent him away to beat King with the type of clinical finish United fans have been accustomed to this season.
United played with more width in the second half and the best move of the game produced the winner in the 70th minute. Lewis Travers race down the left, cut inside into the area and found Stanbridge set up the unmarked Gordon who fire into the roof of the net for his 21st goal of a memorable campaign.
UNITED: Murrell, Travers, Kinch, Essex, Milner, Fuller, Pearman, Williams (23 mins. Bridges), Baird, Gordon, Stanbridge. Not used: Bryan, Sambrook, McKay, Wheeler.
