BANBURY skipper Ian Hawtin was full of praise for his side despite their defeat by Oxford.
Craig Haupt's century proved in vain as Banbury lost out to rivals Oxford in an absorbing Home Counties Premier League clash at White Post Road.

Missing key batsmen Damian Shirazi and Chris Smith, Banbury made a disastrous start and the match could have been over by tea, if not earlier, had it not been Haupt's century.

That gave Banbury something to cling on to and they almost pulled off a famous victory but Oxford got home late in the contest to knock Banbury off top spot in division one.

"From where we were we did extremely well to still be in the game and we could have won it in the end," said Hawtin.

"Their opening bowlers did very well and sometimes it goes like that. At one stage it didn't look as though we would get 100 but Craig (Haupt) pulled it around for us and to get past 200 gave us something to bowl at."
