It was a Jekyll and Hyde performance from Saints who struggled to match their Cornish opponents in the first half before turning it around after the break. But it was a game they could easily have lost as Truro created chances with ease in the first
half alone.
Andy Taylor headed City into an eighth minute lead from an Andy Watkins cross and Les Afful saw his shot deflected wide after cutting into the box moments later. Arran Pugh headed wide from the ensuing corner as Saints struggled to deal with set-pieces.
Story volleyed Saints level in the 25th minute at the far post from a pin-point Winters cross. But they were only back on level terms for six minutes as Pugh netted from close range after Saints again failed to deal with a corner from Taylor.
Paul Walker kept Saints in it when he denied Florin Pelecaci before the break but Jon Brady's were level again only four minutes after the restart, the impressive Story cutting into the box before adding a quality finish.
It was just the boost Saints needed and they stepped up several gears and began to boss the game at last. Ben Mackey had a couple of chances but Watkins also twice missed the target at the other end.
Winters finally put Saints in front for the first time in the 68th minute, netting at the far post from Story's deflected cross. Walker preserved Town's advantage with a smart save to thwart Taylor before Winters grabbed his second in the 85th minute with a deflected 25 yard free-kick wrong-footing Martin Rice.
The City keeper denied Winters his hat-trick with a point-blank save in the final minute before substitute Stewart Yetton reduced the arrears deep into stoppage-time.
