More than 800 former students of Magdalen College School in Brackley joined a Facebook reunion page when they learned a favourite teacher had resurfaced on the social media site.
They called on graphic design tutor Steve Cushing, who now lives in France, to return to the school for a special 1980s event in May.
Back in the day he was also a big name at the town’s legendary Bray Sounds Disco. Throughout the decade, literally hundreds of teenagers from across the area would converge on the school’s Waynflete Hall to revel in his DJ skills.
Management committee member Liesa Coates recalls: “It was the big event of the week with all the latest fashions, all the latest dance crazes and all the latest music. It was also where teenage love blossomed – no wonder Bray Sounds has such a special place in the hearts of former students.
“Whenever any of us met up we’d always talk of it fondly and wonder what happened to Steve – without him and the Bray Sound Disco there would have been nothing to do in the area.
“Then he popped up on Facebook and the news spread like wildfire that he was very much alive and kicking and living in France. A special Bray Sounds reunion page was set up and more than 800 people joined in just three hours.”
Steve says: “I had such a great time with these wonderful young people in the 1980s. And I’m so honoured that they not only remember but still want to share friendships, dancing and laughs – if anything if proof that music touches your soul, this is it.”
Bray Sounds Disco – and Steve – will be making a comeback at Waynflete Hall on May 19 and 20. Get tickets online at http://braysounds.in2global.com/
