A passionate gardener has retired from Sibford School after spending more than half a century there.
Philip Gilbert joined the grounds staff at the Quaker school near Banbury in 1963 and retired on Monday – his 65th birthday. Mr Gilbert, who has lived in Sibford Gower most of his life, said: “I’ve loved working at the school.
“When I started there were six of us looking after the grounds, but over the years we’ve got more and more machinery so we’re now down to a team of three.
“I never thought this would be my only place of work and I’m sad to leave but I need more time to take care of my mother, who is 87.”
During Mr Gilbert’s time at the school, he has seen pupil numbers increase from 260 during the 1960s to now having nearly 400 pupils between the age of three and 18.
He added: “I love my gardening, so I won’t be stopping doing that.”
