The new landlord of an iconic Banbury pub is hoping to inject fresh life into the historic venue.

The Wheatsheaf on George Street is currently undergoing initial renovation after new landlord Adam Thompson, 30, took over about three weeks ago with the intention of further trying to utilise its position within the town and community.

Mr Thompson said: “I remember playing at this pub when I was with a touring band about seven years ago.

“This was the first place I played in and where I cut my teeth so it certainly is a great honour to be given this opportunity – I didn’t think twice about taking this role on.

“We are just repairing some minor bits to the pub at the moment, the building has got years worth of character and that is something I want to bring back.

“I feel like I’m part of the pub community here, and although it has had a bad reputation in the past if I can help turn that around that would be great.”

Mr Thompson will be running the pub with his partner Esme Jones and barmaid Abby Watmore. They hope to open the pub up for new and upcoming bands in the area and also host Aunt Sally and cribbage matches in the near future.

Mr Thompson said: “The pub has a sort of dual personality, as you’ve got those who enjoy socialising in the pub during the day and then we have the music nights in the evening. We’ve got a music technician here now so we can get the maximum potential out of the venue for bands and musicians. We’ve hosted a few events recently and they’ve gone really well. We want it to be the place everyone comes to for live music in the town as there is a really good music scene here.”

It is hoped the pub will introduce new bitter, lager and cider lines in the coming months.

Legendary rockers Leatherat and Folk the System performed at the pub on Saturday as part of its relaunch.
