New equipment will be purchased for the Banbury cancer care unit thanks to a festive fundraising event in Chipping Warden.

The village’s WI has handed a cheque for £510 to the Brodey Centre at the Horton Hospital.

The money will pay for a special pod to transport blood for testing from the unit to the laboratories.

“We raised the money through our carol evening last December,” said the branch’s treasurer Inez Ronaldson.

“We are only allowed to put charity funds through our books if they are for a cause that will benefit us all and the Brodey Centre fitted that.”

Jane Russ represented the centre when she visited members at a special presentation to accept the cheque. She told the fundraisers that the pod would benefit patients by allowing the unit to get test results back more speedily.

Mrs Ronaldson said: “Our Christmas carol evening used to be singing around the village knocking on doors. A few years ago we started holding it in the village hall and we raise money by sale of mulled wine, mince pies and teas and coffees.

“We also have a children’s and an adults’ raffle and our secretary is very successful in getting prizes for these by writing to local companies.

“Some of the donations were auctioned off to raise extra money, such as a fishing day with complimentary lunch at Churchlands estate .

“We find fundraisers good social occasions. They are positive things to do and they give people the opportunity to meet and get to know others in the village.”

The WI holds various other events through the year including a bingo evening, a lunch and a summer garden party.

Its membership is growing, with five new recruits this year bringing the total to 24.
