Village wakes up and smells coffee

THE husband and wife team behind a new coffee shop in Hook Norton are hoping the venue will become a valuable meeting place for the village community.

Hugh and Becky Robertson moved to the village five years ago and have abandoned a hectic commuter lifestyle in favour of living and working locally.

They opened the Old Lion Coffee Shop on Boxing Day in a section of Hook Norton Brewery pub the Sun Inn in High Street, in partnership with landlords Amber Wheatley and Michael Howe.

So far Mr Robertson said the response from Hooky residents has been very encouraging.

“This is a village of 2,500 people but if you look back at old photos you can see how many shops have been lost here in the last 20-30 years,” he said. “We want this to be a social space especially for groups that are less catered for like the elderly and schoolchildren.

“I think it’s somewhere the whole community can use as an informal space. It’s a very active village with a lot of groups. It’s a perfect place for the walker’s group to meet for example before or after their activities.”

The Old Lion Coffee Shop is open from 7.30am-4pm on weekdays and 9am-4pm on weekends. It serves drinks, breakfasts and lunches and is family friendly.
