True taste of Nepal on offer in Banbury

Banbury’s first ever Nepalese restaurant opened its doors to guests hungry for something different yesterday (Wednesday).

The past couple of weeks have been everything but quiet for the staff at Gurkha Spice restaurant and bar in Broad Street, who have worked hard getting everything ready for their big opening.

For the six members of staff, who are all Nepalese, opening the restaurant in Banbury has been a leap into the unknown as, before the premises were purchased last summer, none of them had any particular links to the town. The initiative is also a particulary bold one as the town’s Nepalese community is practically non-existent.

Manager Suraj Bhandari said: “It gives us a unique selling point. This is a completely different type and quality of food and the first of the sort in the area. We’re trying our best to bring something new and completely different to the people of Banbury and to break new ground.”

Prakash Paudel, who owns the restaurant together with Tilak and Gunga Sharma, said he was very excited about the opening. “This is great for us and also great for those in Banbury who love good food,” he said. He added he and the staff are very proud of the food they have to offer. “All our food is cooked with fresh ingredients, quality vegetables, poultry and meat and we use mountain herbs and spices for a subtle, clean, crisp and balanced taste,” he said. “This is the most delightful food you will discover between here, Kathmandu and Pokhara.” The restaurant’s specials include Himalayan lamb, spicy chicken Jaljala and honeymoon chicken. Although Gurkha Spice aims to bring the taste of Nepal to the town there will also be well-known courses from the Indian cuisine on the menu. Those looking for somewhere to have a Valentine’s meal are encouraged to go along to the restaurant tonight (Thursday).
