Town mayor discovers Oasis Project
Banbury Town Mayor Tony Ilott attended a presentation highlighting the work undertaken by the Jubilee Church Oasis Project with elderly residents at a sheltered housing scheme on Saturday.
The project, which has been running for ten months, holds coffee mornings, armchair exercise sessions, film evenings and even sessions of the Paralympic ball sport Boccia with residents at the Sanctuary Housing Scheme in East Close, Grimsbury.
Bob Madge, who manages the project which runs in a community hall offered free of charge by Sanctuary Housing, said the presentation was a chance to highlight the work the church is doing in the community.
“It was a chance to show Sanctuary what we have been doing over the past ten months and the old folk absolutely love it,” he said.
The project has been designed so that it is flexible enough to move to different centres in the future to help other groups of elderly residents.
Mr Madge said: “We called it the Oasis Project because we can move on to other places if we need to.
“It’s a project that will grow and we’re here for the long term.”
Mr Madge also paid tribute to the work Sanctuary has done in supporting the project.
“Clare Bell of Sanctuary has been amazing in her support, she gave us the full run of the hall,” he said.
Residents take part in a discussion forum and put forward their ideas to project leaders before activities are planned.
The project is planning many new events this year for the first time including an Easter Tea on March 27, a summer barbecue and days out for the residents.
The Jubilee Church is based at the community hall in Hanwell Fields. For more information visit www.jubileechurch.org.uk.
