The Mill makes an art out of serving up good real ales

Banbury’s arts centre, The Mill, has been given the thumbs up for its real ales.

Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) members have voted the Spiceball Park venue a favourite, getting the hospitality section of the arts centre and theatre into the final six in the 2013 North Oxfordshire Pub of the Year.

Bar manager Hilary Gasper said: “I’m absolutely thrilled with this accolade. We have been working hard since I became bar manager to provide an interesting and varied selections of real ales.

“The nomination is for the whole team. Real ale is a passion of mine and I do my utmost to present our ales in the peak of condition at all times.

“One of the challenges of running an arts centre theatre bar is matching the ales to the performances, which range from comedy to classical theatre and folk to heavy rock.”

The Mill is the only Banbury nominee for the title. The other finalists are The Bell, Lower Heyford, The Crown Inn, Church Enstone, The Rose and Crown, Charlbury, The Tite Inn, Chadlington and The Chequers, Chipping Norton.

Chairman of North Oxfordshire Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), John Bellinger, said: “The finalists were selected because they received the highest average marks through the year from members who are able to score the quality of cask ale anywhere they visit. Finalists are judged on beer quality, the choice and the knowledge staff have of those beers. The six-point scale ranges from zero for unavailable or undrinkable through average and very good to five for perfect.”
