Children at a village primary school have been learning about a famous Arctic explorer as part of their term project.
Pupils at Boddington Primary School have been working on Ice Worlds since the new term started in January, and are finding out lots about Sir Ernest Shackleton.
Helen Stephenson, school governor and parent, said: “The school have been looking at the creative side of the curriculum and we take one topic and see how we can interweave it, whether it be history or geography or example.”
“They started off back in January learning about Sir Ernest Shackleton’s journey to Antarctica, and it has caused a great deal of excitement amongst the children.”
Sir Ernest Shackleton is regarded as one of the most famous explorers of the 20th Century and was part of Captain Scott’s Discovery Expedition between 1901 and 1904.
Throughout the term, children have been doing different activities to improve their English and maths, including learning how to set up tents and using a compass. The project concludes tomorrow (Friday) when children from Culworth Primary School will be joining them for a workshop with a team of polar explorers.
Pupils will have the chance to see what equipment the explorers use when travelling across hostile terrain and ask questions about their trips.
Mrs Stephenson added: “It has been wonderful to see the faces of the children as they learn, and as a parent it is great to see them doing new things.
“Some of the work done here will be shown to other schools in the area.”
