Students help children to get active with new club

Children at a Banbury primary school are getting active at a club run by Oxford & Cherwell Valley College (OCVC) students.
The multi-sports club has been launched at Dashwood Academy in Merton Street by student volunteers on the Extended Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science course, who study at the college’s Banbury campus.
They visited pupils last Thursday to offer them a chance to try new sports and activities.
Amy Rogers, acting principal at Dashwood Academy, said: “Many of our children are keen to take part in after school clubs, but the difficulty we face is accessing the funding to support them.
“When Oxford & Cherwell Valley College got in touch offering to run a club we jumped at the chance. The children absolutely love it and it has helped some of them to become more confident.”
Once a term the pupils at Dashwood Academy join the college students’ competitive sports session at Spiceball Leisure Centre.
Student Tom Hammond said: “It is great to work with the children. It is quite a different environment to what we are used to but it is really enjoyable. The club gives the children the opportunity to try different sports and get involved in activities for free.”
Tim Martin, course leader at OCVC, said: “Our students are really enjoying working with the children. Many of them are interested in a career in teaching and this gives them experience.”
