Springtime is lambing time
Andrew Taylor with a week-old lamb
Visitors to Broughton Grounds Farm’s Easter open day may well witness the birth of twin or even triplet lambs.
Farmer Andrew Taylor has two batches of lambs a year, in January and April, and the second lambing always produces bigger families.
“It doesn’t always mean it is more profitable though; sometimes that early single lamb has grown much bigger by the time they are ready for sale inJune,” he said.
“We do have to supervise lambing as one in ten will need assistance of some kind and the ewes can have their offspring very quickly.
“You can turn your back for a short while and when you return the ewe has had her lamb – and without help sometimes it can be lying there dead.
“We are very lucky to have a retired factory shift-worker who comes overnight during the fortnight’s lambing.”
The open day is on Saturday, April 6 from 2pm-5pm and as well as seeing the tiny lambs visitors will be able to enjoy refreshments in the farm’s new meeting room.
Broughton Grounds is a mixed farm with specially protected environmental status for its meadows, which contain some very rare wild flowers. These can be seen during mid summer months.
