Siblings beat 540 entrants to win Oxfordshire contest
TWO siblings are celebrating success in a county-wide competition after defeating more than 500 other schoolchildren across Oxfordshire.
Brother and sister Jack and Isabel Mawle each won their respective age categories in Oxfordshire County Council’s competition to design a poster promoting firework safety.
The siblings, who both attend St John’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Banbury, competed against 540 other children to win the competition and will now have their posters displayed across the county in the lead up to next year’s Bonfire Night.
Cllr Ian Hudspeth, leader of the council said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for children to combine the importance of firework safety with creating a piece of artwork that they can be proud of and will be used to promote firework safety across the county.
“The standard of this year’s competition was high and it was a really difficult competition for the judges.” The contest was headed up by the council’s Trading Standards department and was split into two age categories.
Six-year-old Jack took first place in the four to seven-year-old age category while older sister Isabel, eight, won the eight to 11-year-old category.
Isabel said: “I’m really happy that I won. I wanted to make something different and decided on a character called Mr Firework.”
The competition invited entrants to submit posters on a range of themes relating to firework safety including misuse, the law, antisocial behaviour and animals.
The school’s Year One teacher and art co-ordinator Julie Messer said: “We are delighted and thrilled to bits that Jack and Isabel have won. They enter every year and thoroughly deserve it.”
